I took time out today to watch Rock On!!. After being completely sure that I could not possibly fall asleep I started to watch the movie. Even though the pace of the movie is quite slow, I was completely involved in it. After watching the movie, I feel that my previous post on Rock on!! last week does not do complete justice.
The plot is quite simple. A college rock band get a chance to make it big, but it breaks up over ego issues. 10 years later they get back together and perform on-stage against all their problems. Arjun Rampal is a talented looser in the movie and has done his role well. Purab Kohli does his normal monkey business in the movie, adding a touch of humor to it. He has come a long way from Hip hip hurray on Zee TV to VJing and now acting. Farhan Akhar proves not only to be a proven producer-director-writer but also a decent actor and a surprisingly good singer! He has the Jon Bon Jovi roughness in his voice that makes his singing effective, with guitars in the backdrop. I take back my words of ridicule about the music not being rock. It is rock by all standards. However I maintain that the lyrics suck! It's Javed Akhtar's handy work. The words are just words to weave a tune around it and makes absolutely no sense. But overall the music is fantastic. The tunes get tattooed onto your soul.
What struck me the most about the movie is the contrast of life it portrays. Purab is the one with a happy go lucky attitude. He was happy being a drummer and is equally happy being a gujju jeweller. Sure, he misses being a drummer and working with music. But he's over it. Arjun Rampal is emotionally stuck to music and does not want to think of anything else for a career, even at the cost of living a hand-to-mouth life. He is not ready to compromise on his music. Farhan is a very successful investment banker but lives like a zombie, trying to run away from the memories. As a composer, Rob (not sure of his real name) is making a career in music working with Anu Malik. A big step down from being a pianist in a rock band to commercial music doing ad jingles and the sort. (As if working with Anu Malik was not a compromise enough). Praachi Desai doesn't have much to do in the movie. She's just a PYT trying to bring out the sensitive side of her husband and help him live his dream. All in all a good mixture of charecters.
Whenever this is released on DVD it is definitely going into my collection. I almost felt bad when, at the end of the movie "Don't download the music; Buy the CD" was flashed. It's spooky considering that at that point of time most of the junta in a theatre would be thinking of downloading it. (statement copied from another blog ;))
All in all it's a great movie. I increase my rating from a thumbs up to both my thumbs up and also hats off to the team behind it; especially Farhan Akhtar.
Rock on!!
