The only internet connection we have at home is to my desktop. I cannot stay logged in later than 10 in the night without causing inconvenience to my folks. Being one of the nocturnal types, I'm more alive during the night when the city is calm and peaceful. This puts me in a compromising situation. Solution: Wireless router. I did some base research about available routers, seeked advice of some techie friends and even checked at office how our wireless was configured. Most of the ppl I asked adviced me against it and said that since I have a static IP, I might not be able to broadcast my connection thru a wireless router. On calling up SIFY customer care I was told that IT'S NOT POSSIBLE! I ran out of options. But for some reason I've hated the phrase 'not possible' all my life. I decided to attack it head on and purchased a Linksys WRT54G2 router today. On my way back I had already started regretting my purchase, thinking that so many ppl could not have been wrong. I was mentally prepared for failure. But I was not gonna let it go without an attempt.
As soon as I reached home, I started connecting cables and wires as logically as I could and tried to configure the router. SIFY has a few atypical things that puts the subscriber in a fix. It has it's own authentication client software without which one cannot log-in, a computer MAC address lock policy (prohibits connection from multiple comps), a surprisingly incompetent technical team. All in all the best mess one can jump into. Nonetheless, 20 mins later I was sitting on our terrace, sipping coffee and talking to a friend in US on Skype. I was online....wireless! SIFY on wireless not possible? I don't think so!
Now I'm lying on my bed with my laptop on my lower abdomen and typing away....On a second thought, I better stop. Tis not a safe place to park a DELL!
On a parting note - When you hear too many 'not possible's... Don't just nod. Think why not!
Cheers!

Well wireless connections are dangerous...with all the terrorists hacking on to it and sending out e-mail…be careful…is your network secure!? I used to have a wi-fi router at home…which is now packed and put into the box cause I could not figure out how to make it secure!
Thanks for that. The terrorist angle never came to my mind. I was more concerned about my neighbors latching onto my bandwidth. So security is taken care of.
If security is ur only reason for not using a router, go thru the manuals. Pretty easy to secure it.
